Tunnel Mill Located near Charleston, IN about 20 miles northeast of the falls was built in 1812 by John Works. This was a water powered grist mill. The mill burned in 1924. The Boy Scouts of America owns this site.
Chain Mill Located near Hanover, IN about 35 miles northeast of the falls. This was a grist mill that used a unique chain design with hallowed out cow horns to catch the falling water and turn the cogs.
Squire Boone Mill Located near Corydon, IN about 20 miles southwest of the falls completed in 1809 ground grain for nearby settlers. The current grist mill was rebuilt on the original foundation and uses an overshot waterwheel powered with water carried from the caverns in a flume.
Hamer Mill (Spring Mill) This mill is operational and is located near Mitchell, IN about 45 miles northwest of the falls. The mill site was established in 1814. The three story building shown was built in 1817. This is a grist mill using an overshot wheel design fed by a long wooden flume. This mill is part of an historic village inside of the Spring Mill State Park.
Tunnel Mill Located near Vernon, IN about 50 miles north of the falls was built in 1824 as a flour and grist mill using the undershot water design for power. The water was fed to the mill though a 300 foot tunnel carved from solid rock. It was later used as a paper mill.
Becks Mill Located near Salem, IN about 25 miles northwest of the falls was built in 1860. This grist mill used an overshot wheel design and water from an underground stream located behind the mill. This mill was built somewhat later than the others discussed on this page, but I have lived near it all my life. Hey, its my web page.
