Governor Daniels to present historic records awards during Statehood Day celebration
INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mitch Daniels will present the second annual State Historic Records Advisory Board (SHRAB) Governor’s Awards to Clara Marie Burns, Salem, and Dharathula “Dolly” Hood Millender, Gary, at the Indiana Capitol Rotunda as part of the December 11th Statehood Day celebration. Ms. Burns, a volunteer for the Washington County Historical Society, Ms. Hood Millender, a retired educator-librarian and former Gary City Councilwoman, are being honored for their substantial contributions toward the preservation, recognition and appreciation of Indiana’s historic records.
Ms. Burns is being honored for her outstanding work as a volunteer for the Washington County Historical Society. She preserved from destruction numerous county and state documents and priceless artifacts of both Washington County and Indiana history. Ms. Millender is being honored for her decades of public service and invaluable contributions towards the preservation of Gary’s illustrious history. She is the founder and CEO of The Gary Historical & Cultural Society. Under her direction, the organization has sponsored numerous free programs and initiatives for Gary residents of all ages and all of which continue to this day.
This year, Statehood Day commemorates Indiana’s 191st birthday.

About the State Historic Records Advisory Board:
The SHRAB is the focal point of Indiana’s historic records community and a clearing house for planning and prioritization of preservation and public access. The SHRAB works with the Indiana Commission on Public Records to seek federal funding for needed historic records projects, encourage the professional development of archivists, curators, volunteers, and others dedicated to the task of caring for Indiana’s documentary heritage, encourage adherence to archival and records management principles, garner recognition of existing historical records programs, and develop new historical records and archives initiatives. |
