Nestled in the scenic hills of southern Indiana, Salem is only twenty miles from Interstate 65 and 35 miles from Louisville, Kentucky. Salem, with a population of just over 6,000 is one of Indiana's earliest settlements and serves as the county seat for Washington County. Local residents are proud of the community's rich heritage, which boasts a well-maintained public square featuring a unique limestone courthouse and flourishing historical museum and pioneer village at the Stevens Memorial Museum. The Washington County Historical Society's Geneology Library at the John Hay Center draws visitors from across the country to use its extensive resources to trace ancestry. Salem offers plenty of places to spend time, and stay over night with the services of a large metropolitan city, and the integrity of a small town community.

Long distance travelers will find it easiest to take I-65 south from Indianapolis or north from Louisville, and exiting into Scottsburg. From Scottsburg, Indiana - take highway 56 west to Salem, and go east on Market Street from the square. Market Street is also commonly known as "Brick Street" and is an important part of Salem's history, and is now the only brick-paved street in the county.
