Old Business Now on Display in the New Era
The Stevens Memorial Museum has recently developed a new display in the "roving" Berkey Display case that features many old businesses from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in Salem, Indiana. Curator Tony Terrell says, "I have constructed a small town using photos of business' in the late 1800's and early 1900's." Adding, "some of these buildings still exist." The buildings in the photo are, the second courthouse on the far right, (1828-1885), the Hotel Alvis, now El Maguey Mexican restaurant in downtown Salem on the square, and the Benua Store, now Salem Title located in downtown Salem on the square.
Thousands of Artifacts
The Stevens Museum was designed to preserve the heritage of Washington County. Thousands of artifacts donated to the museum by the community are on display.
Living History
The John Hay Center is home to a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Reenactors come to entertain the public in the village square, school, church and more.
Genealogy
Miss Lulie Davis spent hundreds of hours jotting down the history of Washington County. Her records and thousands more are available to the public.
